Nokia buys Dopplr

Acquisition shows growing interest in social networking on mobile devices

Nokia has purchased Dopplr - a social networking company Dopplr that lets users create a list of the interesting places they been to in their home town and cities they have visited.

Nokia isn't disclosing the financial details of the deal, a spokesman said on Monday. Nokia is also coy on how it plans to use Dopplr's expertise.

In a statement the company said that Dopplr will bring to Nokia's Services unit know-how in creating internet-based communities and showing their journeys, experiences and tastes collectively on the Web.

After the acquisition is finalised the current Dopplr service, which is available at Dopplr.com, and on, for example, Flickr and Twitter, will not change and continue to operate, according to Nokia.

The interest Nokia and other mobile phone manufacturers and operators are showing in social networking on mobile phones is growing at an exponential rate.

This is the second time in just a few weeks that Nokia has acquired a social networking company. On September 11 Nokia announced it had acquired certain assets of Plum Ventures, a company that has developed a platform for users who want to share the more private parts of their lives with small groups of people they are close to.

Users are also showing more interest in social networking on mobile phones. On September 3, Facebook announced it had reached a milestone with more than 65 million people actively using Facebook on their mobile devices - a significant increase from 20 million just eight months ago.
