Opera Mini browser used by 30 million phones

Use of browser surged 10% in August

Software developer Opera has revealed its mobile phone web browser Opera Mini is used by more than 31m handset owners worldwide.

Opera said use of the browser has surged by 10 percent in August this year and was 147 percent up on the same time last year.

Google and Facebook maintained their position as the most popular sites with Opera Mini users, while Nokia and Samsung were the most common handsets owned by Opera Mini users.

"We work hard to ensure that Opera Mini works on almost every mobile phone because we are on a mission to bring the Web to the world, and the mobile phone is the world's most prevalent communications device," Jon von Tetzchner, CEO, Opera.

"It is a question of when - not if - most people will access the web with a mobile device, and Opera Mini is ready to help them get to that content quickly and affordably."
