More than a quarter (28 percent) of Brits that have a landline telephone haven't used it in six months, says Rightmobilephone.co.uk.
Research by the comparison website revealed that of those that have used the landline, 64 percent said they have only receieved calls on it.
Nearly a quarter claimed they only had the landline installed in a bid to get an internet connection, while 91 percent said they use their mobile phone for the majority of calls they make and receive.
More than a third (34 percent) have considered getting rid of their landline, while 68 percent claimed they can 'easily live without it'.
However, 89 percent believe there will always be a need to landlines and more than two thirds (67 percent) of these say its because businesses predominately use landlines.
Nearly a third admitted they wouldn't part with their landline because friends and family may use the number to get in touch, while more than a quarter (26 percent) said utility companies had the number and they didn't want to stop them getting in touch.
Furthermore, nine percent of those with a landline claimed they don't actually have a telephone plugged in, while 84 percent have an answerphone service but only 35 percent check for message.
"It's fairly obvious that mobile phones were always going to have an impact on the use of landline phones, similar to how they have affected the usage of phone boxes, as previous research we carried out has shown," said Neil McHugh, co-founder of rightmobilephone.co.uk.
McHugh said he thought the main reason people have landlines, aside from in business, is to get the internet, especially as some packages offer evening and weekend calls for free.
"People have nothing to lose by having one, but some companies make customers sign up thinking they have the landline for free. This might be true for a set time, but line rental charges soon creep up, so people should be careful when signing up."
