Garmin delays mooted iPhone rival

'Nuvifone' not likely to hit market until 2009

Garmin has delayed the launch of its Nuvifone until the first half of 2009.

The 3G touchscreen device, which was first announced earlier this year and was expected to rival Apple's 3G iPhone, will mark the satnav manufacturers first entrance into the mobile phone market. Originally slated for release in autumn 2008, the GPS handset is expected to benefit from a 'Where am I?' feature that identifies the user's location as well as the ability to instantly geo-tag pictures taken on the phone's built-in camera.

Garmin admitted that "meeting some of the carrier-specific requirements will take longer than anticipated".

"We remain pleased with carrier interest in the device and are working toward making necessary design changes to meet their requirements. We anticipate launching the product during the first half of 2009."
