Motorola smartphones get movie downloads

Watch 'The Italian Job' on your mobile

Motorola phone users will soon be able to watch full-length films on their handset, including 'The Italian Job', 'School of Rock' and 'Jackass'.

Under a deal with Paramount Digital Entertainment 40 titles, including classic movies and new releases, will be available through Motorola's online store for between £5.99 and £8.99 each.

Users will be able to download titles to a PC and then copy them to a handset that has the H.264 (Mpeg4) codec, such as Motorola's new Z10.

When quizzed whether users would actually watch a film on a smartphone screen, Andrew Till, a senior director on Motorola's multimedia team, told the Guardian: "People see video on a mobile in a different way. They want something they can watch while they are on the treadmill, on an exercise bike or while they are commuting when they don't want a large device. We know from the video consumption on phones that consumers want this."

Till said users watch between 22 and 26 minutes of a film at one time and that content would eventually be available to download scene by scene.

Motorola claims it is the first mobile manufacturer in the UK to offer full-length films.
