Virgin Trains increases mobile-phone coverage

London to Glasgow route gets new technology

Virgin Trains is teaming up with Vodafone to increase mobile coverage in its carriages.

The mobile-phone service provider will be installing repeater technology that transmits 2G and 3G signals into all 52 of the train operator's fast Pendolino trains that run on the London to Glasgow route by November this year.

The news will be welcomed by the 70 percent of business travellers who discuss business on their mobile phones while on the move, according to Vodafone.

According to a survey by Vodafone, 15 percent of business travellers also confessed to discussing confidential new products or services while travelling; 26 percent admitted they had followed up on a lead overheard in someone else's phone conversation.

Mark Bond, director of enterprise marketing for Vodafone UK, said business people should consider the most appropriate form of communication on the move, switching to more discreet methods, such as text or email, when necessary.
