T-Mobile G1 follow-up coming this summer

Second Google Android phone on the way

T-Mobile USA has revealed that it will launch its second Google Android phone "early this summer", but has yet to announce further details of the handset, which rumours suggest will be called the T-Mobile G2.

"T-Mobile is planning to offer the follow-on device to the T-Mobile G1 early this summer," the company said. "We'll have more details to share on this exciting Android-powered device later this month."

The carrier's parent company earlier said the G1 has sold more than 1 million units, and T-Mobile USA has talked about introducing new Android manufacturers. HTC makes the G1 and unveiled the HTC Magic in February, sparking speculation that the next Android phone from T-Mobile USA will be the Magic.

Google Inc., which is the lead supporter of the Open Handset Alliance that has developed the Android operating system, has said that more than 18 Android phones will be on the market globally by the end of the year.

June has already become a busy month for new smarpthone news, with Sprint Nextel putting the Palm Pre on sale this Saturday and with Apple Inc. expected to describe new iPhone hardware for the already announced iPhone 3.0 software on Monday.
