Google to launch Star Droid mobile app

Mobile phone app to identify planets and stars

Google has created a mobile phone app that can help handset owners identify stars and planets.

Star Droid uses a handset's GPS to pinpoint the user's location in relation to maps of space and then tag and name the stars that can be seen on the phone's display.

Google has yet to confirm when the Star Droid app will be made available.

"There are lots of great applications being produced all the time so you will just have to watch this space," Google said.

The search engine already offers Google Sky, an add-on to its Google Earth web-based app, that allows you to view stars and plants.
