Report: Apple signs deal with image sensor maker

The next generation Apple iPhone and iPod will benefit from the addition of a 3.2-megapixel camera, according to a report from DigiTimes.

OmniVision has received CMOS image sensor (CIS) orders for Apple's next-generation iPhone and possibly the iPod, according to "market sources".

DigiTimes also said that OmniVision has also secured 5-megapixel CIS orders for another Apple product expected to be launched later in the year.

Ars Technica reports that OmniVision currently lists several sensors suitable for mobile phone applications in the 3-megapixel range, that uses the company's OmniPixel3 technology.

OmniPixel3 purports to offer higher dynamic range and much-improved low-light performance, areas that the next-generation iPhone would benefit from.

The current iPhone comes with a 2.0-megapixel, which pales in comparison with many other mobile phones. Those sensors, adds Ars Technica, also support video, some up to 30fps, which would be ideally suited for the iPhone if rumoured video capabilities coming in iPhone OS 3.0 become a reality.
