iPhone is 'invention of the year', says Time

iPhone could lead to iMac touch & Touchbook

Apple's iPhone has been named 'invention of the year' by Time magazine. The publication gave five reasons for picking the iPhone as 2007's top breakthrough: its aesthetic appeal, its multi-touch technology, the fact that it increases competition at the high end of the mobile market, that it is a genuine handheld mobile computer platform and that better and more advanced iPhones will appear in future.

However, Time said not all the hype surrounding the iPhone should be believed. "Yes, there's been a lot of hype written about the iPhone, and a lot of guff too. So much so that it seems weird to add more, after Danny Fanboy and Bobby McBlogger have had their day. But when that day is over, Apple's iPhone is still the best thing invented this year," writes Time.

Apple iPhone review

"Look at how Apple has propagated its touchscreen interface to the iPod line with the iPod touch. Can it be long before we get an iMac touch? A TouchBook? Touching is the new seeing," the report says.

The iPhone is due for release in the UK on November 9. The device will be available for sale from O2, Apple retail and Carphone Warehouse stores, putting the device into reach of 90 percent of the UK population, according to Apple. The company believes most of the UK will be within 20 minutes' drive of an iPhone outlet.
