Video: Samsung phone includes mini projector

TI's Pico chipset used in super smartphone

Samsung has partnered with Texas Instruments to create a mobile phone with an embedded projector.

On display at Mobile World Congress it has DLP Pico chipset technology from Texas Instruments, which was first announced a year ago, allowing the phone to project an image up to 50in on almost any surface. The phone also has a 5-megapixel camera, integrated audio speakers and a high-resolution colour OLED touchscreen.

Pico projectors seem to be gaining traction over the past few years. 3M showed a prototype at CES 2008 which the company further developed into a polished model for CES 2009. Samsung claims that this is the first mobile phone with embedded projection in a contemporary form factor.

The phone will hit the market later this month in Korea as the W7900 and later this year in Europe as the I7410. With reporting by Mikael Ricknäs in Barcelona I'm Nick Barber, IDG News Service.
