Vodafone plays down Palm Pre rumours

Could Vodafone be exclusive UK carrier?

Speculation is rife that Vodafone will be the exclusive UK carrier for the upcoming Palm Pre smartphone.

Palm PreVodafone has played down the blogosphere rumours, but fallen far short of denying interest in the phone, saying only that at this time it has 'no plans for the Palm Pre'.

Sources such as the MobileTopSoft blog disagree, however. MobileTopSoft quotes "various leaks from Vodafone officials" as saying that the Palm Pre "will head to the UK via Vodafone ... an exclusive deal which will consolidate Vodafone's position in the UK".

The blog claims that Vodafone and Palm are in negotiations over the Palm Pre, which is seen by many as Palm's answer to the Apple iPhone - an O2 exclusive in the UK.

Vodafone has a history of working with Palm, notably on the Palm Treo 500v handset. But prior to the iPhone/O2 contract being announced, it's believed that several UK carriers held talks with Apple - including Vodafone.
