Google sells unlocked G1 phones for £266

'Developers' can get unlocked Google Phone

Google has made available an unlocked version of the G1 Google Android mobile phone. The Android Dev Phone 1 will be available to Google Android developers in the UK and elsewhere.

Google announced over the weekend that it's making available the Android Dev Phone 1, a SIM- and hardware-unlocked phone that ships with a system that's fully compatible with Android 1.0. Owners of the Android Dev Phone 1 can use any SIM.

Google explained the decision thus: "Some developers may choose not to use a retail device, preferring an unlocked or no-contract device".

To buy the Android Dev Phone 1 you have to register as an Android developer, paying the $25 registration fee and then purchasing the G1 for $399 (£266).
