Six great free apps for the iPhone

Get internet radio and make VoIP calls

Want to make your iPhone even better than it already is? Then check out these six free apps from the iTunes app store. They include mobile news and sports aggregators to voice over IP (VoIP) calling app and even an internet radio service.

SportsTap: The Free iPhone Sports App

You can find countless ways to stay on top of sports scores, schedules, standings and related information, but none more simple and efficient than the free SportsTap iPhone app.

SportsTap gives iPhone owners access to news, standings, season stats and leaders, team schedules and more, for PGA, NASCAR, Formula One, Premier League and UEFA.

SportsTap is remarkably easy to navigate, making it painless to switch back and forth between sports. And because you can view all current games for specific sports on one screen, it's easy to track all of the league games on a given day.

The scores screens don't automatically refresh, but a tiny button in the bottom right corner of the display lets you quickly update pages whenever you see fit.

One complaint: the app doesn't appear to have any sort of play-by-play features.

i.TV for iPhone: The only TV guide you need

The free i.TV application for the Apple iPhone works very much like your cable or satellite TV's menu channel, except it's portable. Switching TV listings is as simple as typing in a new post code and selecting the appropriate TV service, eg BBC.

The free iPhone download lets you bookmark, shows, actors, movies and theatres for easy access to related information at a later time. And i.TV has a search function that lets you look for your favourite TV shows and content to see whenever it's showing.

i.TV could also be called i.Movie, because the free app offers lists and descriptions of all the movies playing in your area, as well as information on which local theatres are playing them and when. And it now integrates with Netflix, so customers can manage their online rental queues from inside the application.

Unfortunately, i.TV only works in the US.
