The Pearl Flip 8220 is the first BlackBerry smartphone in a clamshell design. The Wi-Fi-enabled handset has a second colour LCD display on its exterior to supplement the standard phone screen inside. In common with other BlackBerry Pearl handsets, the Flip 8220 has a two-characters-per-key SureType keypad.
Armed with a 2Mp camera and a music and video player and manager, the Pearl range of BlackBerry handsets is seen as the more consumer-friendly offering from the traditionally business-oriented smartphone manufacturer. An iTunes synchronisation and media manager applet is included.
The Pearl Flip's onboard storage can be supplemented using a removable microSD andSDHC (Secure Digital high capacity) card of up to 16GB. This puts it on a par with the cheaper Apple iPhone 3G and the latest Nokia handsets. It is also comparable with the memory capacity of the Google Android G1 handset launched on T-Mobile in the UK today.
