BBC iPlayer coming to Nokia N96 smartphone

First phone to get BBC's video-on-demand service

The BBC's iPlayer service will be available on smartphones for the first time next month, following a deal between the BBC and Nokia.

The video-on-demand service will be available on Nokia's new N96 handset, giving users access to TV shows such as Top Gear and Have I Got News For You, and radio shows such as The Archers, for up to a week after they were first broadcast.

"Over the past eight months we have worked tirelessly to ensure BBC iPlayer is available on as many platforms as possible, from the PC and TV to games consoles and mobiles," said Erik Huggers, director of future media and technology at the BBC.

"This partnership is critical to ensuring we continue to reach out to audiences wherever they are and allow them to catch-up on their favourite BBC programmes."

N96 owners will be able to download videos over 3G or a Wi-Fi connection, and all content will be free. However, the costs associated with downloading videos could spiral depending on customers' contracts - those who download TV shows over 3G could soon see their monthly subscription costs soar, unless they're on a contract offering unlimited data downloads.

The Symbian-based Nokia N96 features a 5-megapixel camera, 16GB of internal memory, a 2.8in screen and Nokia's N-Gage gaming service.

"The Nokia N96 is going to provide a gateway to quality viewing on the move and will raise the bar for mobile screen and audio entertainment," said Simon Ainslie, managing director at Nokia. "The enormous success of iPlayer has demonstrated the desire audiences have for accessing programmes at a time and a place that suits them."
