Intel Atom-based MSI Wind to hit US in June

Computex 2008: Mini laptop to cost from $399

The MSI Wind, the ultra-low-cost laptop that runs on Intel's 1.6GHz Atom processor, will be available is the US from June this year.

The US edition of Wind will be available in two versions: one running Microsoft's Windows XP and one using Novell's SUSE Linux OS.

A few things set Wind apart from competitors, which is going head to head with the latest version of the Asus Eee PC, including the 1.6GHz Atom microprocessor, a larger 10in screen and a six-cell battery that gives it around six hours of power. Wind also carries an 80GB hard disk drive (HDD) instead of a flash memory-based Solid State Drive (SSD). No release date or specifications for the UK version has been available yet, but it is available for pre-order.

The Window's XP version will be priced at $549 (£275) while the Linux model will cost $399 (£200). The Linux device shares the same screen size, hard drive and microprocessor as the XP device, but it carries a three-cell battery that allows only around 2.5 hours of power and does not offer wireless data transfer using Bluetooth, which the XP device does. The Linux version also comes with less DRAM (dynamic RAM), 512MB versus 1GB for the XP laptop.

Both Wind laptops come in a variety of colours, including black, white and pink, can access the internet via Wi-Fi 802.11b/g and include 1.3Mp webcams and three USB ports.

There will also be several hardware configurations users can choose from that can make the laptop more or less expensive. For example, Wind can carry up to a 320GB hard drive, which would cost more.

MSI will market a smaller version of Wind with an 8.9in screen elsewhere in the world, but initially this will not appear in the US.
