Queensland college deploys Samsung ATIV hybrid devices

Samsung Electronics has signed an education partnership with Queensland's AB Paterson College which will see the latter deploy 1400 Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro devices running Microsoft's Windows 8 operating system.

The 'one device per student' initiative aims to create an integrated learning platform whereby teachers can design and deliver interactive learning experiences.

The Samsung ATIV Smart PC Pro is an 11.6-inch hybrid device. With all components built into the screen of the notebook, it can either be used as a laptop, or detached from the keyboard and used as a tablet with full touch capabilities.

Samsung said the device will enable the college to enhance collaboration between students and teachers. It will also allow the use of multi-media tools in addition to other learning methods.

"We selected the Samsung 'Windows in the Classroom' solution as our objective was to deploy an ICT platform and range of devices that complement our teaching and learning framework," AB Paterson College principal, Brian Grimes, said.

"Our focus is on collaboration, communication, creative innovation, critical thinking and problem solving... The Samsung and Microsoft interactive learning technology support this approach and will enable us to take it forward into the future."

The college began teaching using the system in January with students in fourth, fifth, and sixth grade. Devices will be made available to the senior school in 2014, with prep school students to use them from 2015.

AB Paterson College will also implement a program to train staff into e-mentors.

Samsung did not reveal the value of the partnership transaction.
