More evidence of higher-resolution iPad 3 emerges

Images in iOS 5 beta suggest a 2,048 x 1,536 pixel display

Further evidence that Apple is planning to increase the display resolution of the iPad 3 has emerged.

Earlier this week Macworld reported that Taiwanese sources claimed the iPad 3 would have a display with a resolution five or six times higher than that of the iPad 2 and would launch in Q4 of 2011.

Since then, images of the Twitter framework in the iOS 5 beta have been discovered by the Techunwrapped website that suggest the iPad 3 will indeed have a resolution of 2,048 x 1,536, double the 1,024 x 768 display of the original iPad and iPad 2.

iOS 5: What you need to know

Techunwrapped concludes that the images must mean that the iPad 3 must be due to come out at around the same time as iOS 5, which will happen at some stage in autumn. So we could see the iPad 3 as early as Q3, even earlier than the previous reports had claimed.

There have been plenty of rumours about the iPad 3's display circulating in recent months, with some claiming that it could even have 3D screen.

Others have claimed that Samsung is manufacturing AMOLED (active-matrix organic light-emitting diode) displays for Apple's next-generation tablet.
