3 to stock Samsung Chromebook series 5 laptop

Mobile network has yet to reveal pricing

UK mobile network 3 has confirmed it will be stocking Samsung's Chromebook Series 5 laptop when its hits the UK next month.

The laptop, which was unveiled this week, is the first available to the public to run Google's Chrome operating system. The 12.1in device is just 20mm thick and has a 1280x800 anti-reflective and anti-glare display.

Powered by a 1.66GHz Intel N570 dual-core processor, it also benefits from 3GB of memory and a 16GB solid-state-drive, which is smaller than those in other laptops as no files are actually stored on the Chromebook Series 5. Instead, they are stored in secure online space. This means users can still access their files even if they lose or break the laptop.

3 has yet to reveal whether its agreement with Samsung will be exclusive and the price of the laptop.

"3 is delighted that we’ve been selected as the 3G connectivity partner for the Chromebook launch in the UK. We’ll have more details to share in the next few weeks so stay tuned," the mobile network said.

Initially, it appeared the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 would only be available online through Amazon and PC World. However, PC World announced today the Samsung Chromebook Series 5 will also be available through its high-street stores.

"The Google Chromebook is an exciting new technology that delivers another computing option for our customers. It is the first to store all documents in the cloud offering users a completely new and efficient way of working and storing precious information," Jeremy Fennell, category director at PC World.

The Samsung Chromebook Series 5 comes in both a Wi-Fi only model or 3G and Wi-Fi version. Available from June 24, it will be priced at £349 for the Wi-Fi only version and £399 for the 3G and Wi-Fi model.
