Nokia launches Booklet 3G netbook

First laptop from smartphone giant

Nokia has officially announced plans to launch its first laptop, with the Windows-based Nokia Booklet 3G due to be unveiled at a Nokia World event on September 2.

The Booklet 3G is a 10in netbook powered by an Intel Atom processor. Nokia said it uses an ultra-portable aluminium chassis that's just over 2cm thick and weighs 1.25kg.

Furthermore, the netbook includes GPS capabilities which, working with the Ovi Maps gadget, can pinpoint your position in seconds, according to Nokia.

Nokia said the move into the portable computing market is a natural evolution for the company.

"A growing number of people want the computing power of a PC with the full benefits of mobility," said Kai Oistamo, Nokia's executive vice president for devices.

"Nokia has a long and rich heritage in mobility and with the outstanding battery life, premium design and all day, always on connectivity, we will create something quite compelling. In doing so we will make the personal computer more social, more helpful and more personal."

The company is clearly hoping to take advantage of its brand and its mobile phone distribution channels to compete in the cutthroat netbook segment, according to market research company CCS Insight.

Nokia said full specifications, availability and pricing will be announced at Nokia World, which takes place in Stuttgart.
