First quad-core Intel laptop available online

Aussie PC maker offers system with QX9300 chip

The world's first quad-core Intel laptop is now available for pre-order – in Australia.

Although the 2.53GHz quad-core Core 2 Extreme QX9300 processor is not listed on Intel's most recent chip price list, Australian PC vendor Pioneer Computers said those who pre-order the DreamBook Style 9008, which includes the chip, on its site can expect to receive the system within one or two weeks.

The DreamBook Style 9008 is available in a range of configurations, with one model listed at $1,399 (£680).

The QX9300 is the only quad-core laptop chip on the current roadmap listed on Intel's site (download PDF, but the chip giant has refused to discuss further details so far.

Pioneer's decision to offer the quad-core chip on a pre-order basis marks the second time the PC maker has jumped the gun on an upcoming Intel processor in three months. In April, the company provided details of the first few processors belonging to Intel's Centrino 2 mobile platform - pre-empting Intel's official launch of the platform this summer.
