CES: Dell revamps Inspiron laptop, launches crystal display

Two new products from Dell in time for CES

Dell yesterday unveiled a crystal LCD monitor and revamped its 15.4in Inspiron laptop.

The company announced that it's releasing the Dell Crystal - a 22in LCD flat-panel monitor, which "floats" atop a polished metal tripod. The display was designed with four-millimeter, ultra-clear tempered glass, Dell said.

Both a microphone and webcam sit above the screen.

The monitor, with a starting price of $1,199, will be shown off at the CES show, which kicks off next week. For the latest from CES, keep checking PC Advisor's CES 2008 blog.

Dell also unveiled an updated Inspiron laptop, which is 25 percent smaller and thinner, and almost a half a pound lighter, than its predecessor model, the company said. Dell focused on style with the new 15.4in Inspiron 1525. The laptop can be can be customized with four new optional patterns and color-coordinated accessories like wireless mice, notebook sleeves and messenger bags.

The updated notebook also adds a built-in 2Mp webcam with dual digital array microphones and noise isolation headphones, and high-resolution displays, Dell said.

Dell's news comes the same day that Lenovo announced it is moving into the consumer market with new laptop and desktop lines.

Lenovo is slated to release three new consumer-oriented laptops and three new desktops in the second week of January. A clear takeoff on its ThinkPad series, the laptops make up a new IdeaPad family, while the desktops, which will not yet be available in the US, are branded IdeaCentre.
