Fujitsu-Siemens has joined the Mobile Broadband Initiative, which hopes to increase the number of laptops that feature in-built support for mobile broadband.
Backed by a $1bn (£668m) marketing budget, the initiative designed a logo that will be used to signify that a laptop is mobile-broadband ready and capable of HSDPA (High-Speed Downlink Packet Access). According to the GSM Association, which manages the initiative, if a laptop bears the logo it can support at least 3.6Mbps on paper (although 7.2Mbps is recommended) and 1Mbps in real-world capacity.
Fujitsu Siemens will use the logo on its entire professional laptop range, which the company says comes equipped with the integrated support for HSDPA needed to qualify.
Ton Brand, project director at the GSM Association, said that Fujitsu Siemens Computers, Toshiba and ECS are expected to release products with logos in the immediate future while Dell and Lenovo hoped to make their logo-branded laptops available in the first quarter of 2009.
