Mini laptop ships with XP Home or Ubuntu Linux

Toshiba has launched its first 'netbook', with the Toshiba NB100 taking on the likes of Asus' Eee PC in the fast growing market for cheap ultraportables.

Based on a 1.6GHz Intel Atom chip, Toshiba's NB100 runs either Windows XP Home or Ubuntu Linux 8.04 and includes 1GB of RAM and a 120GB hard drive. Other features include support for 802.11b/g, 10/100 Ethernet, three USB 2.0 ports and a 0.3-megapixel webcam.

The Windows model ships with a Microsoft Office trial, as well as the full version of Microsoft Works 8.5, while the Linux version comes with OpenOffice 2.4 pre-installed.

Available in either black, gold or silver, the NB100, which has an 8.9in screen, is expected to launch in the UK next month for £260.
