An internet campaign that aims to get 'Killing in the Name Of' by Rage Against the Machine (RATM) to the Christmas Number One in place of The X Factor winner Joe McElderry, may succeed, says Hitwise.

According to the web metrics firm, last week Searches for the term 'rage against the machine' increased by almost 600 percent, and accounted for slightly more (0.0001 percent) more searches than the term 'joe mcelderry'.

"Add in the fact that 'Killing in the Name Of' is currently sitting atop the iTunes chart, and it looks like a distinct possibility," said Hitwise.

The internet campaign is being heavily supported by social networkers on Facebook and Twitter.

However, McElderry's version of the Miley Cyrus hit The Climb was available to download as soon as the show ended last night.

Whether RATM will be able to maintain their position as the most downloaded single this will remain to be seen.
