Sony plans to release a digital TV tuner for its PlayStation 3 (PS3) console next year, according to Warwick Light, head of the company’s marketing in New Zealand.

"We're also hoping next year... to release a digital tuner for the PS3, turning it into a programmable TV recorder," Light told The Press in an interview.

"A lot of people think that the PS3 is just a games machine. It's not a games machine. Well (laughs), it is, but it isn't (laughs again). It's a future-proofed super computer."

Sony could not immediately be reached to verify Light's comment.
