Today will be the busiest online shopping day of the year, says the IMRG (Interactive Media in Retail Group).
According to the internet trade body, 'Mega Monday' will see around £320m worth of purchases made in the UK, with an estimated £28m spent between 1 and 2pm.
Research by the trade body revealed that 77 percent of shoppers are planning to purchase at least half, if not more, of their Christmas shopping online, that's up on the 56 percent from last year. The survey also revealed that UK shoppers will spend a total of £13bn online in the run up to Christmas.
David Smith, director of operations at IMRG, said: "The internet has become the best place for shoppers looking to make the most out of their squeezed spending resources and find the best prices and products for presents this Christmas. Online has definitely come of age this Christmas."
Bruce Fair, managing director of comparison site Kelkoo, added: "Historically, traffic has peaked on the second Monday of December. However this year, the high volumes of traffic will last for some time and we wouldn't be surprised if the 15th was just as big for online shopping. This may be due to the fact that many big name retailers are offering later delivery slots, allowing people to shop for longer and still get deliveries in time for Christmas".
