The BBC is more popular than social media sites Facebook and Twitter when it comes to accessing breaking news online, says iCD Research.

The market research firm revealed that half of web users rely on the BBC news website, compared to 19 percent that head to Twitter, Facebook and even YouTube.

Furthermore, 18 percent of web users head to the Sky News website for find out more on breaking stories.

iCD said the website of Daily Mail and the Mail on Sunday, the Mail online, was the most popukar website of a newspaper, used by 13 percent of Brits seeking breaking news, while The Sun and The Daily Telegraph, were the next popular newspaper websites with seven percent.

Overall 60 percent of web users headed to sites belonging to newspapers for their daily news fix online.

The research also looked at which social networks were most popular with Brits. Facebook came out top, with 60 percent of Brits using the social networking site. A third used Friends Reunited and 10 percent admitted to having a Twitter account.

"Twitter may be the darling of celebrities and politicians, but it has yet to catch on with the average Brit," said iCD's Research executive, Katie Knott.

"Social media and online news sites doubtless have advantages over print media for breaking news, but over a quarter of those we surveyed do not get their news from the internet."
