Harry Potter breaks Amazon record again

1.6m pre-orders for 'The Deathly Hallows'

The final instalment in the Harry Potter book series is set to break records at online retailer Amazon.com.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows is not due for release until July 21, but Amazon has already received 1.6m pre-orders worldwide.

Amazon started taking orders for Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows on February 1st 2007, and demand for it has eclipsed the previous record of 1.5m.

Web users have also been warned to be wary of suspicious emails that capitalise in the high levels of interest in the boy wizard.

Last week, Sophos warned Potter fans not to open an email which claims to contain details of Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.

Security companies have intercepted an email promising a copy of the book, but rather than getting a sneak preview, impatient muggles who click on the file will instead find their PC infected by the W32/Hairy-A worm.

"Using such social engineering at this time is a trick dastardly enough for Lord Voldemort himself," said Graham Cluley, senior technology consultant for Sophos.
