'Online Photoshop' details emerge

Adobe plans free, hosted version of application

Adobe plans to launch an online version of its image-editing program, Photoshop, within six months.

With this ad-supported, hosted version of the popular software, Adobe hopes to compete with the increasing range of free online photo-editing applications, including online image-editor Fauxto and one of the latest additions, Flash-based Picnik.

The move follows Adobe’s announcement in February that it will bring its video-editing technology online in the form of Adobe Remix, enabling Photobucket users free and direct access to its video mixing tools.

The new service will be similar to Remix as it will be free of charge and aimed at entry-level users who want a quick and convenient way to edit and enhance their images. As well as being easy to use, Adobe hopes it will be of a higher quality than other free online image-editing applications. The service will generate revenue through online advertising and will form part of a larger effort by the company to provide integrated hosted services.

“Like any forward-looking software business Adobe is looking at new ways to deliver its technology to the market,” Michael O’Neil, digital business manager at Adobe told us. Hosted editions of their award-winning digital imaging and digital video editing technology “are an obvious place to start”.

The company believes that bringing a Photoshop-branded hosted service to the market would be an extension of its “strategy to deliver the best Photoshop” possible.
