Inventor claims Slingbox infringes patent

Sling Media confident suit has no merit

The creator of a wireless speaker system is suing Sling Media for patent infringement.

Stuart Mershon claims that Sling Media’s Slingbox device violates his patent on a device that uses a wireless telephone network to transmit audio signals from a home audio source to a remote speaker.

The Slingbox plugs into a TV and then sends the feed over the internet to a remote device with an internet connection. Mershon’s invention includes a remote speaker device that cooperates with a transmission unit to send signals from a home audio source to a remote speaker.

Mershon notified Sling Media of the infringement in a letter in March 2005. He has also complained that the company has sold at least half a million Slingboxes and asked a Texas court for unspecified damages.

Jason Krikorian, vice president of business development for Sling Media, has denied the claims and is confident that the suit is without merit.
