MySpace introduces missing child alerts

Amber alerts sent to MySpace US users

MySpace is now distributing alerts to notify US members of missing children in their area.

The social-networking site has announced a partnership with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) under which they plan to distribute online amber alerts via the MySpace site. MySpace users will receive a small text box at the top of their portfolio which they can click for more information, including the missing child’s photo.

Amber Alert Program was created in 1996 and is named in memory of nine-year-old Amber Hagerman who was kidnapped and murdered in Arlington, Texas. It’s a partnership between law-enforcement agencies, broadcasters and transportation agencies which sends out urgent bulletins in serious child-abduction cases. It will now benefit from MySpace’s mass distribution which will provide quick, viral support to law enforcement.

The Amber Alerts went live on MySpace yesterday. The site has also announced a new set of features, including email verification, to increase online safety and privacy for its community. Other recent privacy and security features include chat safety restrictions and age restrictions for communication.

Ernie Allen, NCMEC president and chief executive officer said, “Amber Alerts will allow the online community to be part of a nationwide effort to bring even more children home.”
