Sohu upgrade targets Baidu & Google

Chinese search engine adds faster updates

Chinese internet company Sohu.com has released the first update to its Sogou search engine since late 2005, adding faster updates to the search engine's index and offering speedier results for users.

Sohu needs a boost to remain competitive in China's fast-growing search market, as its offering trails far behind market leader Baidu.com as well as Google and Yahoo, according to the China Internet Network Information Center,.

Sogou 3.0 has a faster crawling speed, allowing the search engine to index 500 million web pages per day, the company said. Moreover, each page can be analysed and added to its index in under a minute. The company did not say how long this process took previously.

Improvements to the site's analysis and page-ranking capabilities will mean faster, more accurate search results, Sohu said, adding that Sogou's database now includes 10 billion retrieved Chinese-language web pages. That's a big jump over the previous version of the search engine, which had a database of 2 billion pages
