Google & NASA plan 'major' announcement

Further details expected later today

NASA’s Ames Research Center plans a "major announcement involving Google" today, and although the pair have provided no details, the announcement could relate to a previously signed deal signed calling for Google to develop up to 1 million square feet at NASA's site.

NASA and Google signed a memorandum of understanding in 2005 for development of part of Moffett Field, a former US Navy base, closed by the Navy in 1994 and made available for civilian use. It currently serves as a civilian airport, along with being home to NASA's Ames Research Center.

Google construction on the former naval base would offer it tax advantages as by building at Moffett, Google would be exempt from state and local property taxes because the site is on federal land.

The memorandum also has Google working with NASA for "large-scale data management" and "massively distributed computing". The two operate a website on which employees of the two companies can share information and comment on collaborative efforts.

Further details are expected to be announced at 11am PST (7pm GMT).
