The internet is now 100 million websites strong according to research firm Netcraft, which credits the growing number of blogs and small business sites for huge growth this year.
The company said the web reached the latest milestone in its November 2006 survey, adding that the addition of 3.5 million websites over the past month has helped the internet double in size since May 2004. Over 27 million sites have been added to the internet in this year alone
Blogs can take much of the credit, according to Netcraft, with huge demand for free blogging tools offered by Google and Microsoft. The research firm also said that domain industry juggernauts Go Daddy and 1&1 Internet have seen strong demand for low-priced domain names and shared hosting accounts this year.
Previous milestones in the growth of the web include April 1997, when 1 million sites were reported; February 2000 (10 million); and May 2004 (50 million).
