Wikipedia on a flash drive

Access the web from any offline PC

Webaroo has teamed up with U3, the creator of smart flash drive software, to enable people to access the web from any PC without the need for a web connection.

Webaroo – the self-proclaimed world leader of 'Web to Go' – allows people to download and carry portions of the web on an offline laptop or mobile device, and the partnership with U3 means users will be able to store that content on a USB flash drive.

U3-enabled flash drives allow people to take their Windows applications and desktop preferences with them, so they can plug the device into any PC and fire up their settings.

The group has been working with a variety of software developers to allow people to launch software directly from the drive, and the deal with Webaroo could mean smart flash drive owners could one day take Wikipedia with them too. The online encyclopedia is believed to be too large to fit onto today's biggest flash drives however.

The partners said Webaroo users can access the selected web content wherever they are, without having to install any software or transfer any files. Consumers download Webaroo and selected web content onto their laptop, mobile device or USB flash drive for free, or purchase a device with Webaroo bundled on it.

The company added Wikipedia to its collection of nearly 300 downloadable web packs earlier this year.

Webaroo Wikipedia is available for free, without the need for the 5GB download, on November's PC Advisor cover disc.
