Blinkx provides searchable European news

EC content now available to users

More online users may begin accessing video and audio content produced by the European Commission now that Blinkx, the video search engine, is including in its database content from the European Commission Audiovisual Service.

The European Commission Audiovisual Service includes videos, photos and audio coverage of European news dating back to the 1940s. The content is currently available on the European Commission website but could reach a wider audience through Blinkx.

Blinkx allows users to search for keywords and find multimedia material from a wide variety of sources, including major television channels like CNN, BBC News and the Discovery Channel as well as amateur video sites like YouTube.

Hundreds of hours of content from the EC, including the type of footage that could be used by media professionals and productions aimed at offering information about EC policies, will become available, Blinkx said today.

Blinkx competes with the other popular sites including Google, Yahoo and AOL, which all have developed video search services. Online video sites, particularly amateur video sharing sites like YouTube, have grown dramatically in popularity over the past year.

Blinkx claims that its search uses more accurate and reliable technology than those offered by Google and Yahoo. It licenses its technology for use by other content providers including Lycos, which uses it to power its video search engine, and AOL, which uses it on its StudyBuddy site aimed at school kids.
