Nearly two thirds (62 percent) of web users have no idea what their broadband download limits are, says Eclipse.
Research by the ISP revealed that despite 82 percent claiming to know what bandwidth is, more than two in five (44 percent) use a number of bandwidth-heavy applications, such as YouTube and video chat, at the same time.
Furthermore, 72 percent said their ISP didn't provide any help or information when it comes to making the most of their bandwidth.
Eclipse said that more than nine out of ten (92 percent) web users experienced period when their net connection was slower than usual, but a third said they don't believe continuously watching video streaming sites slows an internet connection.
These findings provide evidence that many consumers are no longer clear about the packages they're buying," said Clodagh Murphy director of Eclipse.
Murphy said ISPs should focus on a more open, honest and trustworthy way to sell internet services as there's "a massive education process that needs to be undertaken for the everyday customer".
"This can only be achieved by proactively offering advice to users about the speeds they're actually getting, how much data they have consumed, what's consuming it, and how much they have remaining, in order to uphold a level of trust between them and the customer."
