Facebook focuses on photos with new comment capability

Facebook users will now be able to upload photos to their comments with a new feature that rolls out Wednesday.

Facebook is moving fast, adding long-requested features at lightning speed over the last couple months. First the social network added threaded replies, then emoticons, hashtags, and now photos in comments. No GIFs, sadly, but perhaps the rumored Instagram video product will be integrated somehow.

(Come on, Facebook. The people want GIFs.)

Uploading photos in comments isn't the same as a photo preview appearing when you post a link to a news article or an ecard. This is a whole new thing: Check out the camera icon on the right-hand side of your comment box. If you don't see it, don't worry. It's coming.

Facebook didn't officially announce the new feature, but told The Verge that it will roll out in stages on Wednesday. It looks like the Facebook apps won't support uploading photos in comments just yet, but the feature will be available on the network's desktop and mobile sites.

As other social networks continue to nip at Facebook's heels, the company is realizing that it must listen to its users and add much-needed functionality to stay relevant. Sure, photos in comments is a small step, but those steps add up.
