Icann to set up Asia office in Singapore: report

Internet regulator Icann (The Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers) might choose Singapore as its base in Asia, according to Icann CEO Fadi Chehade.

Icann is a non-profit organisation headquartered in Los Angeles and regulates Internet domain names globally.

Speaking to media this week in Singapore, Chehade said that the decision to make Singapore the base in Asia might be announced as early as in April. This decision will be taken at Icann's upcoming international meet in Beijing.

Along with Singapore, there are likely to be two other hubs of the organisation. Istanbul in Turkey could be the base of operations for Europe, Africa and the Middle East whereas Los Angeles could be responsible for North and South Americas.

This re-organisation of Icann will likely blunt its US-centric bias, for which is it has often drawn flak from Brazil, Russia and China.

Icann might also establish smaller offices in other Asian cities such as Beijing and Tokyo to support the Singapore office.
