Audi and Nvidia bringing Tegra-powered in-dash systems to the U.S.

The Tegra chip powers Audi's "MIB" in-dash infotainment system, which will debut in 2014 models in the U.S.

Audi heated up the show floor here in Vegas Tuesday, announcing that its upcoming line of 2014 vehicles will incorporate Nvidia's powerful Tegra chipset into the cars' in-dash computer, which Audi calls "MIB." ("MIB" roughly translates to "modular infotainment platform" in German.)

The MIB system provides live traffic updates and turn-by-turn navigation courtesy of Google Maps. The system is currently available in the Audi R3 in Europe, but the 2014 models will be the first time Audi brings MIB to drivers in other countries, including the U.S.

Aside from giving you directions, the MIB acts as a control panel from which you can adjust cabin temperature and drive settings, and perform basic diagnostics on the vehicle. The MIB can also give you live local weather updates and help you find the cheapest gas station in the area.

By using the Tegra chipset Audi can easily upgrade the MIB's processor with more powerful Nvidia chips as they come out. This means that the built-in navigation and entertainment systems can stay looking fresh and new by taking advantage of modern features (such as new apps or more responsive touchscreens) as they're developed.

Audi is also peddling the MIB to other car makers. Hopefully Audi, which has established itself as the automaker most adept at in-car tech, can help other car companies make ugly, limited in-dash systems a thing of the past.
