Aus government must set the scene for Cloud: OzHub

OzHub is encouraging Australian governments to set a goal of establishing the nation as the top Cloud-ready spot in Asia-Pacific (APAC) by 2020.

OzHub is an alliance that aims to build Australian consumer and business confidence in Cloud computing. Its members include Macquarie Telecom, Fujitsu, VMware, Infoplex, Alcatel_Lucent, and F5 Networks.

According to the coalition, it is making the push as the opportunities from the massive growth in Cloud have captured the imagination of countries and businesses in the region, with governments keen to encourage investment in their own nations. Of course, some will benefit more than others as they become hubs for APAC.

"Research commissioned by OzHub in 2011 showed that Australia has the potential to become a hub for Cloud in the region," OzHub chairman and Macquarie Telecom national executive, Matt Healy, said.

Despite strong investment in Cloud infrastructure, such as the National Broadband Network (NBN), and the Federal Government recognising the importance of goals with its 2020 Digital Economy targets, there is an absence of direction from governments in terms of Cloud computing opportunity adoption, according to OzHub.

This serves as an important message to governments as it should encourage them to become model users of Cloud services in order to demonstrate these practices to Australian businesses, Fujitsu executive general manager, Craig Baty, said.

On the downside, Healy noted that the 2012 survey of Cloud-readiness in APAC found that Australia has moved down the rankings. Despite the result, he said that it represents a means of defining the criteria that Australia can improve on to enable a more supportive environment for Cloud.

"While there are some areas where Australia may be at a disadvantage, such as international connectivity, it is important to note that this can be offset if we set a goal for ourselves of being the best in other areas," he said.
