Users to vote on Facebook policy change

Members already voting for current SRR and Data Use Policy

As of today, Facebook members have seven days to vote on possibly its last Governance Vote in a bid to decide on its Statement of Rights and Responsibilities (SRR) and Data Use Policy.

There has already been a growing number of users voting against the proposed ARR and Data Usage Policy changes.

At the time of publication, Facebook reported 17,804 users picking the current SRR and Data Use Policy, while the proposed SRR and Data Use Policy only garnered 2094 votes.

The poll will only be obligatory if it receives responses from 30 per cent of its members (300 million users). In the even that less than 30 per cent votes, the results will be cast as "advisory".

The current vote system was cast as the social media giant was facing disapproval with its updated ARR and Data Use Policy updates, especially on ridding the vote mechanism dealing with governance and policy alterations as well as the company distributing user data with its affiliates such as Instagram.

In addition to that, it has proposed updates to its advertising policies, privacy control, and ownership of content.

On its Facebook site governance page, Facebook communications, public policy and marketing vice-president, Elliot Schrage, said the feedback allows the company to respond to questions and make substantive changes to its proposals before they are implemented.

"Based on your feedback and after consultation with our regulators, including the Irish Data Protection Commissioner's Office, we've further clarified some of our proposals. We are posting a revised version of the Data Use Policy that includes those new proposed changes," he said.

The vote ends on December 10.
