Firefox Add-Ons: More Than 3 Billion Downloaded So Far

More than 85 percent of all Firefox users have at least one add-on installed, Mozilla says.

It's no secret that Firefox add-ons are a big part of the browser's enduring popularity, but this week Mozilla unveiled some new data underscoring just how widely used they really are.

In fact, this week saw downloads of Firefox add-ons cross the 3 billion mark, according to a Thursday post on the Mozilla Blog.

Thats almost half of the worlds population and more than the number of people on the Internet today, wrote Mozilla's Erica Jostedt. This amazing milestone was made possible by the hundreds of millions of Firefox users and more than 25,000 Firefox add-ons developers around the globe.

Mozilla also published the infographic below summarizing some of the browser's key add-on milestones.

85 Percent of Firefox Users

Mozilla's Firefox Add-Ons Gallery brought add-ons to the Web back in 2004 as a way to let users of the browser customize its features and functionality. In 2009 add-ons came to mobile phones as well.

Today, more than 85 percent of Firefox users have at least one add-on installed; most of those, in fact, have an average of five add-ons, Mozilla says.

Among the most popular add-ons are AdBlock Plus, Firebug, NoScript, Personas Plus, and Video DownloadHelper, according to Jostedt. Privacy and security, search tools, bookmarks, and themes are among the most popular categories.

Also included in Mozilla's Add-Ons Gallery are more than 150,000 user-created collections of Firefox add-ons.

Automatic Update Success

Mozilla has plenty of reasons to celebrate its free and open source browser lately.

Following the release of Firefox 14.0.1 last week, for example, the browser's new automatic update mechanism propelled that new release into widespread use much faster than has been true of other versions.

Just a week after its release, in fact, Firefox 14 already accounted for nearly half of all Firefox copies in use.
