CloudStore secures first contract win

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency has bought services from an SME providing agile education services

The government's CloudStore has secured its first contract win for the public sector, two weeks after it opened for business.

The Maritime and Coastguard Agency (MCA), which operates under the Department for Transport (DfT), has bought agile education services via the CloudStore from Emergn, a UK based SME.

The services will be used to help deliver an agile pilot project for the Future Coastguard Programme, which aims to modernise the UK's coastguard service.

"Agile is one of the delivery areas of the government ICT Strategy and it's about doing things differently to reduce waste and project failure. The Future Coastguard Programme is delivering complex change to HM Coastguard, enabled by ICT," said James Findlay, future coastguard programme director at the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

"Our experience of the CloudStore catalogue was that it was simple and fast. We were able to identify potential service suppliers and award the contract in less than 24 hours, which in terms of our aim for doing things differently without the need for lengthy and costly competitions for commodity service, I can definitely say that the CloudStore delivered for us," he added.

Findlay attended the government's first BuyCamp last week, which saw 30 public sector parties come together and discuss with government how they could take steps towards purchasing cloud services via the G-Cloud framework.

This comes as good news for the CloudStore, which suffered an outage last week after Microsoft's Azure platform, on which the website is hosted, went down for several hours.
