Adele grabs most downloaded album and single of 2011

7Digital reveals mobile sales accounted for half its downloads in 2011

UK songstress Adele had the biggest-selling album and single of 2011 when it comes to digital downloads, says 7Digital.

According to the digital downloads firm, 21 by Adele topped the digital album download charts while her track Someone like you, which she first performed at the Brits in February last year, was the most downloaded single.

Adele had a second entry in the top five most downloaded singles with Rolling in the Deep, which came in at number 3. LMFAO and Party Rock Anthem took the number two spot, while Pitbull's Give Me Everything and Moves Like Jagger - Maroon 5 's duet with Christina Aguilera - made up the rest of the top five.

I'm with you by The Red Hot Chilli Peppers was the second most downloaded album of 2011, with ColdPlay's Mylo Xyloto coming in third. Fallen Empires by Snow Patrol and Loud by Rhianna also featured in the top five most downloaded albums of 2011.

Furthermore, 7Digital said mobile sales accounted for half of all music downloaded from 7Digital. The firm said it plans to unveril an app for Windows Phone 7 devices in the coming months, to join its existing mobile apps for Android and iPhone

"We've seen another year of strong growth in 2011, especially from smartphone and tablet devices. Sales from mobile devices rose significantly year-on-year for the final two weeks of 2011, rising from approximately 10 percent in 2010 to 50 percent in 2011," said Ben Drury, CEO at 7Digital.

"We know that consumers want access to their music collection on the device of their choice, anytime, anywhere and we're helping enable that."
