Google shuts down Wave and six other services

Spring-clean of products that didn't have the impact Google hoped for

Google Wave is one of seven products and services the search engine is dumping as part of a "spring-clean".

The collaboration and communication tool, which was launched by Google in 2009, didn't prove as popular as hoped. The search engine said it will become read-only from January 31, 2012. Furthermore, it will be shut down completely on April 30.

Users will be able to continue exporting individual waves using the existing PDF export feature until the social network is switched off.

Google Gears, technology that allows online services such as Gmail and the Google Calendar to be made available offline, will cease working from December 1, while Google Bookmarks List, which allows users to share their bookmarks with friends, will end on December 19.

Google Friend Connect that allows webmasters to add social features to their sites by embedding snippets of code and the Google Search Timeline, which offers a graph of historical results for a search query, are also being shut down next year alongside Knol, a collaboration tool to improve web content, and the Renewable Energy Cheaper than Coal (RE

"We're in the process of shutting a number of products which haven't had the impact we'd hoped for, integrating others as features into our broader product efforts, and ending several which have shown us a different path forward," Urs Hölzle, Senior Vice President, Operations & Google Fellow, said in a blog.

"Overall, our aim is to build a simpler, more intuitive, truly beautiful Google user experience."
