£1 in every £10 spent during September was online

A total of £539.4m was spent on the web per week

UK web users spent £539.4m online each week in September, says the Office for National Statistics (ONS).

According to the ONS, a total £5,613.9m each week in September, which equated to £1 in every £10 being spent on the web. ONS also said the figure is three times what was spent online in 2007.

Overall retail sales were 0.7 percent up on August, which saw a 0.4 percent decline on the previous month.

"Despite rates of inflation rocketing, people are still shopping but going online for the best deals," said Alison Guise, MD of PriceRunner.co.uk.

"In the last month PriceRunner has seen an increase in traffic to the site of 6.5%; proof that in these harder times consumers are looking for cheaper alternatives and real value for money online."
