Google to shut Ardvark and 9 other services

'Fall spring-clean' will see staff moved to Google+

Google has revealed it will be shutting down 10 services including the social search service, Ardvark.

As part of a "fall spring-clean", the search engine said it would discontinue some of the 10 services, while others will be merged with existing Google products.

"Technology improves, people's needs change, some bets pay off and others don't," said Alan Eustace, Google's senior vice president, in a blog.

"This will make things much simpler for our users, improving the overall Google experience. It will also mean we can devote more resources to high impact products - the ones that improve the lives of billions of people."

Google Web Security, Image Labeler, Desktop and Notebook are also among the 10 services being discontinued. It is thought the Google employees that worked on these projects will be transferred to Google+, the social network launched by the search engine earlier this year.

"We've never been afraid to try big, bold things, and that won't change. We'll continue to take risks on interesting new technologies with a lot of potential. But by targeting our resources more effectively, we can focus on building world-changing products with a truly beautiful user experience."
